South Gloucestershire Orchard Project and Orchards of the Kings Chase

You may recall that we heard from John Morris and Neil Philips about the South Gloucestershire Orchard Project at the Summer 2010 Forum meeting.  Further progress has been made since then, and we currently have a work placement – Sarah Wells – who is helping us to develop a Parish-based Heritage Orchard Survey.  The survey will be launched in the New Year.  If you are interested in helping to survey orchards in your local area then drop us an email at

In addition - the Wildways project has been working with local older people to capture their fun and fascinating memories of a time when the Kingswood area was awash with market gardens and orchards. Pig keeping and scrumping a plenty!  The 1950’s OS map has 64 parcels of land marked as orchard between New Cheltenham Road and Mount Hill/Cock Road.  Today there are none.  A poster was created from interviews with the Cadbury Heath heritage group (attached).  And Orchard Eye have captured it for posterity on a lovely film intercut with old maps and photos as well as modern photos of the South Gloucestershire scrumping project – see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPRiyRIojkc
