Faith in the City: the Barton Hill experience
The Rev Martin Gainsborough of St Luke’s Church, Professor of Development Politics at the University of Bristol
Barton Hill, one of the poorest suburbs of Bristol, has been home to St Luke’s Church for 170 years. The church stands as a symbol of Christian witness. We are a small but faithful band in a community where church-going is out of fashion. We face many challenges. Consider whether the mission of your church might extend to Barton Hill.

The Emmaus Project
Richard Pendlebury MBE DL. Richard was recently awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Business Administration by UWE. He is a Deputy Lieutenant of the County and City of Bristol.
Richard has spent the last 20 years creating and running charities to serve the marginalised in society. He is CEO of the homeless charity Emmaus and Founder/Patron of Changing Tunes using music to rehabilitate offenders.

Street Pastors have come to Bristol
Speakers: Adrian Prior-Sankey, The Ascension Trust and Eddie Wall of Redland Parish, a Street Pastor
Christ challenges us to go out to the people where they are. Street Pastors help people late at night, diffuse tension and act as intermediaries. They have been active in other cities for 10 years; we will hear from two who have experienced this service.

What legacy are we leaving?

The church is not what it was. A universal truth is now dismissed as personal opinion. Christians are no longer at the centre of culture but on the margins. We need to embrace new ways of creating communities of trust where hope may flourish.

Society is under pressure: the loss of values is corrosive. Will our legacy show Christians active in the Community?
Seating for each lecture will be arranged so that discussion groups are preformed when the evening starts. There might be sheets of paper available, one with possible discussion topics for the breakout session, one with a chance for the group or individual to feedback suggestions or even to volunteer!

8.40pm Reconvene as one meeting for questions to the speaker(s)
