Are you holding or thinking of holding an Election Hustings for May 2015?



This time we know exactly when the General Election is going to be. This gives a good opportunity for Churches to join together to plan for local hustings with candidates. Given the increasingly diverse Electoral Scene and to help those running such events to be prepared, the Somerset Churches Together with the Diocese of Bath and Wells are putting on a training event. There will be insider views from both sides of the hustings: David Heath, retiring MP for Somerton and Frome, who was Deputy Leader of the House of Commons, and Peter Brain, who served the URC nationally for 10 years as Assembly Secretary for Church and Society.

There will advice on things to consider and plenty of opportunities for questions.

SOME ADVICE: We have been advised by another local MP of two ways of increasing the chances of getting candidates to attend: 1) You should consider booking any hustings event NOW as they do get booked up. You don’t need to work out all the details, and the February 6th training will help with this, but you do need a date and a start and finish time. 2) Candidates will see invitations from groups of churches/Christian bodies joining together in a locality as more of a priority to attend than an invitation from a single church.
