Team Fair cheer on the torch through Fairtrade Bristol

bristol fairtrade torch

What a beautiful sunny morning to cheer the Olympic torch as it passed through Bristol this morning. And what a wonderful sight - a sea of Fairtrade Team Fair flags along the route, brandished by students from four schools working to become Fairtrade schools, either side of our Fairtrade City banner.

As I went along the route handing out the flags, it was great to have so many children of all different ages say ‘Oh it’s a Fairtrade flag, I definitely want one’. In an age when the power of top brands seems to dominate young minds, how encouraging that Fairtrade is viewed so positively.

Fairtrade, like the Olympics, is a brilliant reminder that we are part of a global community. As Bristol looks forward to hosting the Kenyan Olympic team next month, the University of the West of England is making a point of serving them Fairtrade tea and coffee from Kenya, to show the importance of a strong and fair trading relationship between our countries.

The message of true sportsmanship is one that Fairtrade replicates by its spirit of fairness and honesty. So, Bristol is proud to be part of Team Fair and will keep waving the Fairtrade flag!
