CONFERENCE MONDAY 12th NOVEMBER 2012

Traumatised Children:The Psychology, The Neuroscience, What to do, How to be.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Margot Sunderland

Author: ‘What Every Parent Needs to Know’ and winner of BMA Medical Book Award.

Director of Education and Training at The Centre for Child Mental Health, London. Honorary Visiting Fellow at London Metropolitan University and Child Psychotherapist with over 30 years’ experience of working with children & families. She is an author of over 20 books in the field of child mental health. What every Parent needs To Know won First Prize in the BMA Medical Book Award 2007. She is the originator of Helping Where It Hurts, a therapy programme for troubled children.

Overall she is concerned that parents, teachers and mental health professionals alike are offered the most up to date psychological and brain science research on how children and young people can be enabled to thrive.

She is passionate about social change for a kinder, warmer world.

The day will focus on the key skills for effective therapeutic communication with a child or teenager, in terms of ‘what to say’ and ‘how to say it’. This rarely comes naturally and cannot be simply learnt from a book. Children and teenagers often don’t know what to do with the feelings they are having. As a result, they discharge their emotions in destructive ways or defend against them. Both ways of coping are nevertheless understandable. It can be just too frightening to think about intense or painful feelings on your own.
