The Bristol Housing Festival Newsletter

Note from the Editor:

In our latest blog post, Housing Festival colleagues Ellen and Andrew discuss how Planning is often seen as a barrier to MMC housing, and yet through our 'Living Lab' approach and various pilots with Bristol City Council and others, we are delighted that Bristol now has first-hand experience of navigating and overcoming these challenges (Read the blog here). In fact, the Local Planning Authority in Bristol have now granted permission to more than nine MMC housing developments, with more coming forward. The vast majority went to a planning committee for decision, where many were then unanimously approved. This is good news for the city, because the adoption of MMC housing is an important piece of the puzzle in increasing the supply of affordable social housing to address the housing crisis, as well as the climate and ecological emergencies.  We also co-hosted a great event with Turley Planning last week, which gathered professionals from across the city to discuss two of the themes of the Bristol Local Plan, which explores how Bristol will develop its framework for deciding planning applications in the city: biodiversity and net zero. We heard from key speakers on Bristol’s housing challenge, the work already being done, and then workshopped practical strategies to see planning deliver on these priorities.
And so the festival continues…

This month we were delighted to host a delegation from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, led by the Director of Planning and Coordination. Their visit to Bristol focused on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the climate emergency and building back better after the Covid impact, to feed into their current review of the capital’s sustainability action plan.
