Last night MPs voted to give the Universal Credit Bill its 'third reading', meaning it's largely set to become law in the next few weeks. This includes devastating cuts to Universal Credit which will be applied to disabled people applying in the future, risking even more disabled people needing to turn to a food bank.
|
But thanks to people like you using your voice, the bill was changed at its last reading and the cuts are much less severe than originally set out. Thank you so much for making this happen. |
|
With 38,000 emails sent to MPs, our collective voice has been impossible to ignore. The UK government has now made changes that will protect hundreds of thousands of disabled people from being forced into severe hardship. |

These include:
-
Removing all cuts to PIP from the bill - meaning that 800,000 people now won't see a cut of £4,500 per year.
-
Securing protections for disabled people already receiving Universal Credit - meaning 2.3 million people won't see a cut of £500 per year.
-
Committing that any future changes to PIP will only happen after a review that will involve disabled people.
-
Increasing the basic rate of Universal Credit - an important step towards a future where our social security system at least covers the cost of essentials.
This achievement shows the power we have when we act together. |

Despite these changes, we know the bill is still extremely worrying for people.
The cuts will affect people newly claiming Universal Credit after April 2026.
